Modern Bridesmaid’s Gifts by Linda Bate
Although the idea of giving bridesmaid’s gifts to those who attend the bride and groom at the wedding is not a new one, but the type of gift that they now receive, and sometimes are requesting, is changing somewhat from the traditional gift of jewelry.
In past days, maids and matrons of honor would receive a charming necklace, sometimes with a pendant, cross or locket, with an engraving of their initials to add that extra something special. Earrings too, would be the perfect appreciation gift, as long as the fitting was correct for that particular young lady. There would be nothing worse than giving a beautiful pair of exquisite earrings to the maid and then have her finding out that they are for pierced ears! Not the right effect for sure.
In recent times, maids are far more likely to want something a bit different. Belly rings are firm favorites, as long as they are made from gold or silver, and perhaps have a precious or semi precious stone added for effect. Ankle chains also have that ultra modern feel although these are not so new to the world of jewelry. They used to imply something quite different but let us all be grateful that this connotation has been lost over the past couple of decades!
Nose studs too, ring the changes and a lot of young ladies would love a tiny diamond stud for wearing on the side of the nose. Not to everyone’s taste for sure, but then this is the 21st century and fashions have swung completely toward what was once considered a little risqué.
Rings, of course, have been with us forever, but then what about toe rings? These perfect little circlets are bang up to date when it comes to fashion. Ladies are far more likely to be painting their toenails these days, and pedicures are now the norm. Feet look great when they are adorned with a ring or two, particularly if the feet are well groomed. Toe rings were once associated with the hippy generation and flower power did have it’s time in the seventies, but these days toe rings have become rather chic and many women would love to get one or two as gifts.
Well toned arms are great places to be wearing jewelry naturally. Bracelets on the wrist are what people normally wear, but some like the arm bracelets that sit above the elbow. Gold, snake-like arm bands look very effective particularly against a light golden tan. However, be aware that this is surely a young woman’s fashion since no one wants to highlight that extra bit of wobbly flesh on an older, less than perfect arm. This piece of jewelry would look very effective if the dresses being worn are sleeveless, strapless or in the Grecian style.
But bridesmaid’s gifts in this modern era do not have to consist of jewelry alone. With the advent of career women, ladies have become jet setters in the world of business. Oddly enough, even marriage is not so common these days and many women are looking to their careers before they ’settle down’ into married life. Often, once they are married, they delay having babies for some time so gifts which accentuate what they do are very acceptable.
In this world of the dot com generation, many bridesmaids’ gifts could consist of great luggage to carry them stylishly to their destinations. Fine leather lap top cases, with enough room for a weekend change of clothes, are perfect for the bridesmaid who is ever on the go. Even carry on luggage for planes are ideal and are made from many different kinds of fabric. If she is absolutely against animal skin, synthetic modern materials are acceptable. These kinds of bags can be personalized by either stamping the outside with the initials of the lady in question, or by engraving small plaques which are attached to the outside of the bag. It must be said though that full names are not advisable for the sake of security, particularly if the woman travels alone.
If luggage seems to be a little impersonal, gift baskets may be the ideal bridesmaid’s gift to present on the wedding day. Depending on what the maid in question likes, these baskets are available filled with all kinds of spa treatments for her to enjoy at a more leisurely time. Scented candles, massage oils complete with ‘how to’ instructions, bath accoutrements in every shape and form, as well as bath robes and slippers, complete with her initials, make for a very interesting gift. Try adding a weekend break for some out of town spa and this could be the perfect gift to give that valued friend.
Gourmet style baskets are also a nice thought and many would love to receive one filled with unusual and tasty delicacies to be enjoyed later. Fine wines, exotic cheeses, even some with caviar, are that kind of extravagant gift that people don’t usually buy for themselves. These could be enjoyed at some future date, with the significant other, making it the perfect treat.
If all else fails, and the bride and groom just cannot make a decision about what to buy as the perfect bridesmaid’s gifts, then the ubiquitous gift certificates are particularly helpful. All the couple have to decide is what amount to spend and then the gift certificates can be presented in a beautiful card, along with a very personal message, to make it complete. The maid is then at liberty to do what most women love to do, and that is shop until she drops!
Online stores are great for this kind of shopping, making it possible to visit many different sections of the site, and it cuts out the marching from venue to venue and wasting time. All she has to do is log on, peruse what is on offer, and make the purchase directly from her computer. And just imagine; it didn’t cost her a cent!
